Choked Up Connections is an exhibition of new work by Nashville based artist Kayla Miller. Kayla explores the connections through power, language and the absurd through the lens of the system with the eyes of a 4’11”, twenty three year old female. Through her investigation, the dependence on objects as a tool to gain or seek power is explored, as well as how they stand in as metaphors to other connections throughout the system. The use of materials in relationship to her body is imperative within the exhibition. Steel rods are manipulated and contorted by force of manual labor as she bends and twists the metal solely with her body. Steel covered in layers upon layers of rust is futilely and laboriously scrubbed, grinded, and polished to reveal an inadequate reflection. The relationship between the amount of labor exerted and the level of hierarchy obtained is questioned. Exploring words used throughout the system, she found pairings that can be simultaneously contradictory and interchangeable; a harmonious dichotomy.
